Seven Steps to Creating What You Want

“Believe nothing, no matter where you read it,
or who said it, no matter if I have said it,
unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense.” – Buddha

The seven steps below are a guide to creating a fulfilling live.  The kind of life you look forward to waking up to each day.  The kind of life where you have no regrets when you look back at your life when you’re about to leave this world.

The guide is a work in progress and will be modified and refined over the upcoming weeks and months.  Every second Friday content will be released for a step. Step One will be released on October 15th, 2010.   If you have suggestions or feedback, please contact me.  I’d love to hear your thoughts about what has worked or not worked for you.

If you find yourself questioning what you read in these steps, that’s great!  As the Buddha advised, don’t believe it just because you read it.  Try other things and find what works for you.

If you are someone who already has everything you want, I offer this thought:

“If you cup runneth over, expand your cup.”
– Mark Victor Hansen

The Seven Steps

You may have read about or even tried steps similar to the ones below. I’ve been guilty of thinking I already know something without actually using it. It’s one thing to KNOW what to do and another to actually DO what you know. Instead of an intellectual experience where you just gather more knowledge, maybe it’s time to have a real world adventure and take action!

Step 1:  Where are you starting from?

In order to measure progress towards a goal, we need to know where we’re starting from.   Otherwise we only see how far we are from a goal vs how far we’ve come.  The latter is far more empowering!

Go to Step One

Step 2:  What do you want?

Before you can get to where you want to go, you need to know where you’re going!  What is your destination?  What do you want to be, do, have, contribute and experience in your life?

Go to Step Two

Step 3:  What’s in the way?

If you aren’t yet living the kind of life you yearn for, chances are there’s something in the way.  The usual culprits are limiting beliefs and trying to control the process and result.

Step 4:  Preparing the Inner World

We have subconscious programming that dictates our behaviour, habits and actions, and thereby the results we get.  To get different results we need to take different actions.

Taking different actions sounds simple enough, yet how can you get yourself to take them consistently?  Self-discipline will only get you so far.  Change the subconscious programming and our behavior, habits and actions change.

Step 5:  Listen and Take Action

Just thinking about what you want is not enough to make it happen.  You also need to take the right action.  Not just any action, action that flows from your intuition.  Action that is sent to you from the universe.  Joe Vitale calls this ‘Inspired Action.’  When you trust the universe or God to guide you; people, resources and ideas show up just when you need them.

Step 6:  Look for Evidence & Celebrate

You can determine if the process is working before you’ve achieved your goal.  How?  Become aware of the times that resources, people, ideas etc. appeared just when you needed them.  These are stepping stones on the pathway to your goals.

Step 7:  Set Yourself Up for Success

If you want to be successful, you need to nourish your mind, body & spirit.  Watch what you put into your mind and into your body.  Become aware of the words you think and say.  Adopt habits that support you and let go of habits that don’t.
